Kohei Nakamura
Kohei Nakamura (b. 1948, Kanazawa), son of the distinguished Kutani ware master Baizan Nakamura, graduated from the Department of Sculpture at Tama Art University. He first gained international recognition through his avant-garde ceramic objects, which were highly acclaimed and acquired by major institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto. In recent years, he has turned his focus to the realm of the tea bowl (chawan), engaging with the perspective of the late tea connoisseur Seizo Hayashiya. Beginning with the practice of “utsushi” (faithful re-creations of classical works), Nakamura has sublimated his own aesthetic sensibility. Viewing the tea bowl as a “Vessel of Thought,” he seeks to harmonize tradition and contemporaneity. His progression from object artist to tea bowl artist demonstrates new possibilities at the intersection of Japanese craft (kogei) and contemporary art.
