Layers of Time | Sangsun Bae Photo Exhibition

このたび、桃青京都ギャラリーでは、べ・サンスンが韓国の大田（テジョン）で生き残った日本人の聞き取りを
行いながら、5年に亘って取り組んできたリサーチをもとに制作した写真作品を中心に展示いたします。
今回の展示の代表作である「Quercus Phillyraeoides（ウバメガシ林）」は、かつて釜山の日本人街だった場所に現存する一本の街路樹に注目して制作しています。この樹の画像をデジタル合成で何層にも重ね合わせることにより、
深く生い茂る森が目の前に現れてきます。森の中の木々の枝や葉が重なり合う姿は、その奥に広がる光のイメージによって深く静かな思索の世界で歴史を生き抜いた一人一人の喜びと苦しみの感情が交錯する過去の記憶を投影しているようにも見えます。
時代の流れの中で過去のものとして忘れ去られようとしている植民地時代の経験や記憶、できごとを題材に、べ・サンスン独自の表現で制作した作品をぜひご高覧ください。

Tosei Kyoto Gallery, newly opened in Kyoto in April this year, is holding a solo exhibition "Layers of Time" by Sangsun Bae, as part of art project KG + from Sep.18 to Oct.18, 2020.
This time, we mainly exhibit photographic works created based on the research she worked on in Daejeon, Korea.
Sangsun Bae creates works using her own unique method shedding light on experiences, memories, and events of those who survived an era that is being forgotten as a thing of the past in the course of history. We can feel like a deep forest appears in front of us by her method of superimposing multiple layers of images of a single roadside tree that still exists in what used to be the Japanese town of Busan by digital compositing when we look at "Quercus Phillyraeoides (Ubamegashi Oak Forest)", the masterpiece of this exhibition. At the same time, various memories of those who survived the shadow of the times are projected on the screen and we can feel the consistent theme of Sangsun Bae’s works, "People-to-People Connection," in the deep and quiet world of contemplation.
After graduating from Sung Kyun Kwan University of Fine Art (Seoul) in 1997, Musashino University of Art, MA Fine Art (Tokyo), Royal College of Art (London), Kyoto City University of the Arts, PhD Candidate (Kyoto), she is currently continuing production activities based in Kyoto. Even after being selected for the exhibition of "The Vision of Contemporary Art (VOCA)" in Japan in 2005 and 2008, she has exhibited her works in many international exhibitions including Korea and Japan, and was nominated for KG + AWARD last year. We hope you can enjoy quality time looking at the works by Sangsun Bae who is active on the world stage.
